Mobile broadband has evolved to the point where speeds can satisfy those who’ve had a taste of broadband before. Traditional broadband includes cable internet which is supplied through a cable company which also provides cable television. Traditional broadband also includes DSL which is high speed internet provided by telephone companies.

What’s the difference between Mobile Broadband and Traditional Broadband?

The main difference is the place you connect. Mobile broadband is a generic term for a type of internet connections which can easily be taken from place to place. That means there’s no wires, large equipment, or power sources that need to be plugged in. Traditional broadband uses devices such as modems which require electrical outlets for power. They also use wires to connect to the computer. These wires are called ethernet cables. It’s because of the use of cables and plugs that traditional broadband cannot be easily transported. So, traditional broadband is distinguished from mobile broadband simply on this basis.

Most people are familiar with a USB stick. The technical name for this type of device is a network interface card or NIC for short. There are other types of NICs which allow you to take your internet connection with you. These devices solve the two main problems associated with traditional broadband internet: wires and plugs. The USB modem gets power directly from the computer, so there’s no need for a plug. It also combines a NIC and modem into one device, so there’s no need for cables.
